Tatum O'Neal played the role of Amanda Whurlitzer in the 1976 film "The Bad News Bears". The film revolves around a group of misfit kids who form a Little League baseball team and are coached by a drunken ex-minor league player, played by Walter Matthau. Amanda is the only girl on the team and also happens to be an exceptional pitcher. Tatum O'Neal won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of 10 for her performance in the film, making her the youngest person to receive an Academy Award in a competitive category. The film was a commercial and critical success and spawned two sequels.
